Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
