Comeback Medvedev Wins First Title in Over Two Years

Nineteen of the Russian's 21 championships have been achieved on hard courts

A revitalized Daniil Medvedev claimed his initial trophy for over two years with success over Corentin Moutet in the competition championship match.

The Russian, a ex- world number one, has experienced a torrid year, achieving just a single victory at the big events and undergoing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

The player's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and issues with his serving in especial - caused him exiting of the world's top 10 and finally separating with former mentor Gilles Cervara.

Now collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually progressed in the last few weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought three-set victory over challenger Moutet.

This represents the player's first title following the Rome competition and maiden on a hard surface since March of that year.

Success also means Medvedev has achieved 21 titles at 21 different events.

"For the first time I am participating in a tournament with my both daughters at once, so to win a championship is especially meaningful," commented world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.

"This title is in dedication of my second daughter Victoria, because the maiden victory I won when my child my daughter was born was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his past six finals, featuring in the German tournament previously this season.

His retrieving strategy and frequent outbursts on the tennis court had led observers to wonder if his ability to play at the highest level was concluded.

Yet the athlete has made changes in recent weeks, striving to approach the net and perform aggressively, backed up by an enhanced service.

The champion came back from a break down in the opening set against the tricky Moutet, winning 4 of the last five games to go ahead.

The pair swapped break points in the second set before the challenger, bidding for his initial tour title, took control to push for a final set.

He saved four early break points in a close final set before Medvedev broke to fifteen to secure the win.

Fittingly, he earned the title with a shot at the net, with the Frenchman incapable to control a return after a lengthy match.
